RealPlayer came with a "downloader" which automatically ran when a web video was being viewed on your browser, but with recent versions of OS X and / or browsers, it did not seem to function. In some cases, it downloads the wrong video when there are multiple on a web page, and in most of the cases the downlaod fails.

iSkySoft iTube Studio claims to get the job done as intended.

I tried iskysoft itube studio but it fails with a stupid error. I also found another application wondershare allmytube which seemed like an exact copycat and as such it couldn't download the video from the Facebook post that mattered.
iskysoft youtube downloader works fine for me on my mavericks equipped macbook pro. it's not a free product though.
